The properties of chemical substances that produce physical
and chemical changes in reaction to light or heat are
applied to imaging. In this area, we are developing such
products as toner and organic photo conductors (OPC) for
printers and copiers, media and ink sheets for dye diffusion
thermal transfer printing, and dyestuff for inkjet printers. |

 |
Responding to the need for outsourcing of active
pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and pharmaceutical intermediates,
we quickly established synthesis routes and manufacturing technologies
and are providing stable supplies. These activities are based
on the organic synthesis capabilities and biotechnologies possessed
by the Group.
We additionally handle a number of other intermediates with
unique functions including varieties of aldehydes, which are
used as raw materials for fragrances and flavours; monomers
for polyimides; and epoxy resin and its raw materials for semiconductors. |

| We provide a wide range of solutions in environment-related
fields, from water treatment to air purification, separation,
purification and deodorization. All of our products in this
area are top brands in the industry and are based on the advanced
technology cultivated over many years by the Group. Their high
performance and high quality are readily acknowledged by customers.
With MCI GEL, high performance liquid chromatography
columns and packing resins, we provide broad-ranging support
for separation technology at every level, from research lab
to industry. |
 |
 |
 |
| |
 |
| The Group develops a variety of high purity
chemicals used in semiconductor and LCD production lines. These
include electronic-and industrial-use ultra high purity process
chemicals that respond to the trend toward integration of semiconductors,
advanced cleaners that achieve highly purified surfaces at low
costs, and high performance wet etchants that optimally match
customer needs and processes. In each of these areas, we provide
solutions optimized to customer needs and processes. |

Our sugar esters are emulsifiers produced with a proprietary
technology using natural substances as raw materials. Because
they are extremely safe, they are used primarily in food products
and also in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and have become a
product indispensable to daily life. We also provide high quality
food processing materials, such as polyglyceryl fatty acid esters,
that leverage the Group's R&TD and technical service capabilities. |

Carbon is an area of business Mitsubishi Chemical has been continuously
involved in since its establishment in 1934. Coke supports steel
industries both domestically and abroad, and the tar generated
in coke manufacturing processes also has led to an array of
products. Additionally, carbon black is used widely in everyday
items such as tires, printer ink and colorants for plastics. |

| We supply industry with ammonia derivatives,
inorganic acids and a wide array of other inorganic chemicals
and industrial gas products. We also developed synthetic silica
based on the inorganic chemistry technologies cultivated through
these activities. Additionally, we developed a new manufacturing
method for mesoporous silica, whose use is anticipated in a
wide range of applications including catalysts, modifiers, fillers
and adsorbents. |

Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. develops and
markets CD-R, DVD R
and other optical discs. The company supplies the market with
proprietary branded products and also sells azo dyes, the core
technology for recordable optical discs. In the area of dyestuff
for recordable DVDs, the company enjoys an overwhelming share
of the global market.
The Mitsubishi Chemical Group has positioned a broad range of
dye-related technologies including azo dyes as one of its core
technologies, and is developing them for a diverse array of
products other than just optical discs, including high performance
materials for color printers and high performance filters for
displays. |

Li-ion rechargeable batteries are composed of
a cathode, an anode, a separator and electrolytes. The Group
has nearly 20 years of experience in electrolytes and has expanded
its business domain into anode and cathode materials. We take
advantage of our strength as the sole manufacturer in Japan
of three of the separate parts materials to provide comprehensive
proposals that cover from a customer's initial development stages
through to commercialization.
Going forward, we will continue to develop advanced technologies
including higher capacity, compact batteries that respond to
the increasing functionality of mobile phones and other products,
and materials for hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, an area where
increasing demand is anticipated. The Group is committed to
staking out a position as a globally-oriented total solution
provider for energy storage system whose services include materials
analyses and evaluative technologies for battery systems. |

In December 2001, Mitsubishi Chemical partnered with Mitsubishi
Corporation to establish the joint venture Frontier Carbon Corporation.
We led the world in beginning full-fledged commercial production
of fullerene, a new material on par with carbon nanotubes, at
the Kurosaki Plant in May 2003. To do so, we have drawn on the
basic patents of fullerene, other intellectual property and
selling power of the Mitsubishi Corporation Group and on our
own production technology that has been cultivated in the carbon
business over many years. We have begun sample shipments to
nearly 300 corporations and organizations that include raw materials
manufacturers and research institutes, and applications of the
material are expected in a wide range of fields. |
