 |
| What kind of product is YUPO synthetic paper? |
|
 |
|
 |
Manufactured mainly from polypropylene resin and inorganic fillers by a film-forming process (Fig. 1), YUPO is synthetic paper that combines the characteristics of natural paper with the weatherproof and tear resistance of plastic. Applications include exterior posters and signboards such as election poster that will hang outdoors for a long time, ballot papers that utilize its resilience against bending, shopping bags that are durable in rain, and in-mold labels for various container shapes. Since coming to market in 1971, new grades have been developed one after another in response to needs, advancing into a broad array of fields. YUPO can be incinerated like natural paper as it does not produce harmful fumes, and it can also be recycled after use as material for YUPO. Superbly waterproof and durable, as well as environmentally friendly, YUPO's share of the worldwide market for synthetic paper has grown to more than 70%.

Hazard map on YUPO is useful in time of disaster
The increasingly essential flood hazard map, also called a disaster vulnerability map, tells at a glance areas that are likely to be dangerous at times of natural disaster. They are made by each local government to prepare for disasters such as floods, volcanoes and earthquakes.
A flood hazard map shows areas expected to attract water when a river overflows, evacuation sites and emergency contact numbers. Some maps include photos of past flood conditions or a list of goods to prepare in case of emergency to raise citizens' awareness of disaster prevention.
In 2001 the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport revised the flood prevention law, requiring all municipalities to offer evacuation information to citizens at times of flood. To that end they are advised to make flood hazard maps. However, among the approximately 2,000 local governments nationwide, only a few have completed them (estimated at 20% or less). Meanwhile, there is frequent flood damage around the country and the sentiment is rising that the flood control law should be revised to make production of hazard maps mandatory.
YUPO is used for a variety of maps including mountain maps, harbor maps and Self-Defense Force training maps. YUPO is an ideal material for maps, especially those used under bad conditions like a hazard map.
YUPO is also excellent for disaster prevention manuals prepared by governments and enterprises and for triage tags in emergency medicine.
YUPO: durable, safe and beautiful in restaurants too
YUPO menus have gained a good reputation at bars, karaoke and restaurants. Everyone takes up the menu when they sit down. With so many people handling them, they take a lot of punishment, becoming wrinkled and torn, or stained with beer or liquor. Recently YUPO is chosen for its durability and beauty.
| Completely waterproof |
| YUPO is synthetic paper made principally from polypropylene and does not contain any pulp.It will not change even if it gets wet, and there is no danger of weakening and tearing at the creases as with a paper map. |
| Outstanding durability |
| YUPO is strong against pulling, tearing and impact, and its durability far exceeds that of a paper label. |
| Environmentally friendly material |
| YUPO can be incinerated as combustible trash. It does not produce any harmful substances such as dioxin when it is burned. It can also be recycled as fuel. |
| Adopted for use by local governments all over Japan |
| YUPO is used for the hazard maps of many local governments, including Fukushima City, Yamagata City and Koriyama City.Almost all local governments have adopted YUPO for voting ballots in elections at the national level. |
| Durable, water-resistant, oil-resistant |
| YUPO's material of course has durability in itself, and if after-processes of coating varnish or laminating are done, the printing ink on the surface will not come off even when wiped with a cloth containing water, oil or alcohol (YUPO CORP. rubbing test).Since it can be wiped clean repeatedly, it is also safer from the aspect of public health. |
| Ease of handling |
| A tough pliant YUPO menu is safe for the hands of women, the elderly and children. It has no sharp edges like a hard pouch laminated menu and is lighter (about 2/3 the weight of coated paper of the same thickness). As the population eating out grows older and includes more women, a menu that can be safely handled by anyone can be called "universal design". |
| Ease of disposal |
| YUPO is an ecologically sound material that produces absolutely no harmful substances when incinerated.Laminated YUPO is an entirely pp material, so there is no need to separate when disposing or recycling as there is with menus made of paper with other materials. |

| A new feature for YUPO! Water-absorbent YUPO? |

A new YUPO function! YUPO absorbs water?
YUPO is excellent in fields that seek water resistance and durability, and has a wide range of uses such as outdoor posters and notices, tags and in-mold labels, etc.
However, when using water-based glue such as starch or casein glues to label a bottle, it takes a long time for the glue to dry because neither the bottle nor YUPO absorbs water, and it has been necessary to use special glues to use YUPO to label sake or soft drink bottles.
Therefore, YUPO CORPORATION began to develop technology to give the base material itself the ability to absorb water, and last year exhibited prototypes for the first time at the Labelexpo Americas 2004 and Tokyo Pack 2004. It drew a great deal of attention and many inquiries from customers both domestic and foreign.

Bek Se Ju - There are many long-beloved traditional liquors in South Korea, but among them Bek Se Ju is often enjoyed by young people these days.
Chamisul - Jang Dong Gun, a top star in South Korea (the movies Brotherhood and Friend), appeared in TV commercials for the familar Chamisul. |
It was adopted for Kook Soon Dang's Bek Se Ju brand and for Jinro's Chamisul brand. YUPO was adopted for all Bek Se Ju, both for domestic consumption and export, while Chamisul began marketing in the Sendai area only (with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles logo) in June 2005, with the company planning to adopt YUPO labels first in Asia then for exports to the Americas and Europe, after seeing market response.
Not only in Korea, YUPO's Glue Label has been promoted to a variety of beverage manufactures around the world, and it is expected to be adopted by a number of manufactures in the future.
