Status Report on the No. 2 Ethylene Plant of the Kashima Plant
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
As for the No. 2 Ethylene Plant of the Kashima Plant, we announce the status as of March 14, 2008 as follows:

  1. Investigation of the cause and measures for preventing a recurrence
We reported on measures for preventing a recurrence at the third meeting of the fire accident investigation board organized by Ibaraki prefectural government on March 12. Today, we submitted the report (available only in Japanese) to Ibaraki prefectural government and were instructed to strictly ensure the measures for preventing a recurrence and report the achievement every six months by Ibaraki prefectural government.
     
  2. Restarting operations of the No. 2 Ethylene Plant
The suspension order of the Plant has been partially lifted on March 5, 2008. Therefore, we are taking every possible safety measures and preparing for restarting operations of the Plant (five of eight cracking furnaces) scheduled for around mid- to end-March.
