R&D is the primary engine of our company's growth and expansion, and particularly of profit growth. However, the world economic environment has undergone major changes recently, and global competition in this area has become fierce. In order to create highly profitable business models and bring valuable products and technologies to market quickly, it is more important than ever for us to select the best R&D themes and focus our energies on them. Today, speed is of the essence.

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group (MCHC group) considers the goals of sustainability, health, and comfort as three basic criteria for evaluating the direction of corporate activities. By adhering to these criteria in carrying out our business operations, we aim to become a firm that can glow sustainably within society, and a leading company that is trusted worldwide. This is part of our Group vision.
Our APTSIS 10 mid-term management plan, announced in 2008, embodied this vision. We invested strategically in our Performance Products, Health Care, and Chemicals domains, and aggressively re-adjusted our business portfolio, furthering our shift towards becoming a company with a sustainable high-profit structure.

Under that management policy, MCC has identified seven key, next-generation growth businesses to nurture: white LEDs; lithium-ion battery materials for HEVs; chemical components for automobiles; sustainable resources; organic optical semiconductors; organic photovoltaic modules; and personalized medicine + support for new pharmaceuticals. By taking advantage of the close connection between our business divisions and intellectual property division, we are prioritizing our development efforts in light of real market conditions and moving forward aggressively.

At the same time, it is not enough simply to develop outstanding in-house research and development. In order to produce truly innovative results, it is essential that we also tie up with other R&D facilities at home and abroad. Thus, while Mitsubishi Chemical companies continue to polish the many world-class technologies that form our core competence, at the same time we are looking to the future, actively planning new tie-ups with research organizations around the world. Moreover, we are trying to provide an ideal working environment where all researchers can fulfill their potential and produce truly outstanding results.

In the broadest sense, MCHC Group is constantly working to respond to the various needs of our customers and of society as a whole. In a more immediate sense, however, every day we are taking up the challenges of cutting-edge, mission-directed R&D, with the unwavering aim of bringing to life our company slogan: Good Chemistry for Tomorrow.
