The Mitsubishi Chemical Group Science and Technology Research Center, Inc. (MCRC) builds, strengthens and enhances the fundamental technologies that are essential for the Mitsubishi Chemical Group to implement its business strategies and to create new businesses, and also conducts research and development based on these technologies. MCRC is largely responsible for enabling the Group to "make dreams come true through chemistry," for making contributions to global society, and continually developing and expanding its business.

Under its vision of Good Chemistry for Tomorrow, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group is carrying out business activities in such a way as to contribute to the growing needs of 21st century society for sustainability, health, and comfort. We expect that chemistry will play an even larger, more direct role in these areas than it has in the past. In fact, we believe we are entering a new "Age of Chemistry."

As a comprehensive chemical research firm, MCRC boasts a wide variety of technology platforms and roughly 700 researchers known for their specialization and originality. Through the application of these powerful resources, plus the promotion of development activities that combine a high-level analytical ability, materials design ability, and process development ability, and the flexible organizational management that oversees our research facilities and projects, MCRC has an unparalleled drive that enables us to create an endless stream of innovative new products and technologies.

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group has identified seven fields as important businesses to cultivate for the future, and MCRC is currently focused on speeding the development of resources in these areas. In particular, we are striving to grow certain fields as priority development areas, including white LEDs (which involve technologies such as gallium nitride substrate, phosphors, encapsulant, and other materials, as well as chip ・ lamps) and lithium-ion battery materials for HEVs (involving cathode and anode materials, electrolytes, and separators, among other things). Moreover, we are accelerating the development of certain specific projects - chemical components for automobiles, sustainable resources, organic photo semiconductors, organic photovoltaic modules, personalized medicine - that involve close cooperation with our business areas.

In today's severe economic climate and with intense competition only increasing in technical fields, it is widely expected that R&D work from here on will exhibit even greater originality and proceed with even greater speed than in the past. Therefore, we are making every effort to strategically improve our basic technologies and strengthen our global cooperation with customers, business partners, and external research organizations. We are also continually striving to foster our own exceptional research staff so as to significantly increase the driving force behind our development efforts.

Our research scientists and research teams set very high goals for themselves, and then attain them, providing society with substantial new value in the process. As a result of this experience of achieving something extremely difficult yet also worthwhile, both our researchers as individuals and our organization as a whole learn and grow, which leads us to take up our next challenges with even greater enthusiasm. That is also part of what we mean by Good Chemistry for Tomorrow.
